WEDDING INFO!! *

We’re so honoured and touched that you’re considering coming all the way to Portugal to celebrate with us. It’s a magical place that is very dear to both of us and we want to help make things as smooth and easy as possible, so below is some information that we hope is helpful.

We will be updating this site periodically, but please don’t hesitate to reach out at any point with any questions or thoughts.

Where is this going down?

The ceremony will take place outdoors in the gardens of Paula, Camille’s mother’s house in Penedo, Colares, Portugal, just 45 minutes from Lisbon.

Penedo is a small village nestled along the magical Sintra forest and situated atop a hillside offering sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean. The village itself is rustic and incredibly charming, with very old winding and narrow streets that are often at steep inclines. There are stunning beaches nearby, several of which are reachable in under 10 minutes by car. The coastline in this area is rugged and gorgeous, and being Portugal, there is an incredible beach culture and lots of delicious seafood to be had.

Just 20 minutes down the road is the breathtaking town of Sintra whose historic centre “is famous for its 19th-century Romanticist architecture, historic estates and villas, gardens, and royal palaces and castles, which resulted in the classification of the town as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Sintra's landmarks include the 8th century Castle of the Moors, the Romanticist Pena Palace and the Portuguese Renaissance Sintra National Palace.”

WHAT TO EXPECT WEATHER-WISE

In the summer in Portugal, expect glorious, sunny weather.

The Sintra region has its own microclimate and as such stays slightly cooler than the rest of Portugal. It should be sunny, warm and beautiful but rarely feeling too hot. If you choose to explore Portugal beyond the Sintra region, prepare for very hot summer temperatures (30+ °C / 86+ F).

Late June, early July, there is often a marine layer of fog that hugs the Sintra hillsides in the mornings and usually burns off by late morning, giving way to bright blue skies. It’s beautiful and can make for calm and cooler mornings, followed by hot and sunny afternoons.

GETTING AROUND

Driving around the Sintra region, especially in Penedo and in other neighbouring villages, is a romantic but tricky experience.

The roads are narrow, windy, and often steep, sometimes lined on both sides by stone walls. Please be attentive and drive slowly in the villages, especially around turns. Many roads are only wide enough for one car, yet there is still two-way traffic, meaning one car has to find a spot to pull aside and let the oncoming car pass.

For this reason, if you choose to rent a car, we highly recommend renting the smallest size possible. Tips on rental cars below.

Alternatively, Sintra is a 40-minute train ride from the centre of Lisbon. You may take the train at Rossio Station in Lisbon and get off at Sintra Station (the last stop on the Comboios de Portugal (CP) Sintra line). Trains run every 15 to 20 minutes during the day, and tickets cost around 2.30€–2.45€ for a single trip (4.60€–5€ for a round trip). From Sintra, you can Uber, taxi or bus and walk to Penedo and/or neighbouring villages.

Uber and taxis are available throughout the Sintra region including in Penedo, though sometimes wait times may be longer than what you would expect in a city. For this reason, if you need to get somewhere by a certain time, it may be best to schedule a ride ahead of time.

PLACES TO STAY

*Wherever you choose to stay, we recommend booking as soon as possible.*

Airbnbs

We put together a list of Airbnbs nearby that we thought were cute. We selected a range of options to accommodate different configurations and budgets. Here is The List.

Hotels

Plenty in the area, but Collares Sintra Petit Palais is especially charming and walking distance from the wedding reception venue.

Pensão Sisudo is also a great, more affordable option.

Casinhas/studio next to the wedding reception venue

Casinhas means little houses in Portuguese. Surrounding the wedding reception venue are a few casinhas and studio available to rent - they are all beautiful, tastefully renovated, and belong to a family acquaintance. They are not available to rent to the public, so if you are interested, let us know and we can forward more info/videos.

Casinha 1 has 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and is 420€/night

Casinha 2 has 3 suites and is 450€/night

Open studio is 180€/night

Camping

You are welcome to pitch your tent on Paula’s land if you want to keep it natural :)

RENTING A CAR

We recommend renting a car through discovercars.com as they usually have the best deals.

Make sure to check each rental company’s rating on the website, as they are not all the same.

We would recommend picking up and dropping off your car at the Lisbon airport. Each car rental company has its own shuttle picking you up from the airport when you arrive and driving you to the nearby car rental office.

Again, we strongly recommend renting the smallest car possible, and booking early.
